Climate Controlled Self Storage Items
Tires – Due to the fact that tires are constructed from treated rubbers, they will eventually begin to rot if they are not kept in the correct temperature. Spaces such as open garages or outside, under plastic covers will not prevent rot, and thus climate controlled self-storage is advised when storing these items.
Wooden Furniture – By nature, wood will expand and contract when exposed to temperature shifts. In many facilities without air conditioning or heating, the temperature range reach over 100 degrees and below freezing. The shits in temperature will eventually cause the wood to crack and warp, leading to the complete deterioration of the piece over time.
Musical Instruments – As many instruments are made from wood, the same rules apply as with furniture items. Instruments that have become warped or cracked will not be able to be tuned properly, and will require extensive repairs. Additionally, items such as PA systems and guitar speaker cabinets may suffer from speaker rot over time.
Documents – In standard storage facilities, condensation spots can form, along with the threat of rodents and other pests. These elements can work to ruin important documents. Temperature fluctuations can also work to make paper brittle over time, even resulting in document destruction in certain conditions. Regardless of how well the documents are packed, it is imperative that they be placed in an area with AC and heating throughout the year.
Office Supplies – Printer ink cartridges, pens, markers and fax machine ribbons will ultimately dry out if they are not properly stored. Additional items that may become damaged include tape, white out, glue, highlighters, staple cartridges and computers.
Video Tapes and Data – In some cases, companies will choose to store tapes and backup data off-site as a way to save space. Tapes that are not placed in climate controlled self-storage may suffer damage, resulting in lost data and warped tapes.
Considerations
If you or someone you know are in need of storage, the best thing to do is evaluate the items that require placement. Once you have inventoried the various pieces that will be moved, the next step is to compare the cost or value of the items being moved, with the overall storage costs.
Though the monetary value of these items may not exceed the storage costs, it is important to keep in mind the sentimental value associated with them. An old family heirloom may not be worth much to other collectors, but will be something worth a fortune to you and future generations of your family.
