Easy Eco-Friendly Home Winterization Tips
With winter quickly gaining on us, thoughts naturally turn to how to economize on the heating bills for another year. Not everyone can afford to buy top of the line furnaces and windows. So how can the average family with very little money go green this winter and economize at the same time? The following are some of the best ways to get the most out of your heating when times are tight and the budget is small:
· Bundle Up Indoors – There is no need to have the heater set on seventy degrees or above when there are practical ways to keep warm. You have the tools at your disposal and you can save a great deal of money simply by turning the thermostat down to sixty or sixty fives degrees at all times. This does not mean that you are cold, put on a pair of warm sweats and a sweater as well as socks and slippers. Have the children dress warmly inside as well. When sleeping, the temperature should never be set above sixty. You are already bundled up when in bed and your body temperatures lower so you do not need the added warmth.
· Seal Doors and Windows – Make sure to check all the seals around the doors and windows for leaks. If you find any, purchase weather stripping at your local DIY store and seal them up. More money is lost when there is cold air blowing in from a leaky weather stripping. Use a thick towel or blanket and roll it up to put in front of any exterior door to insure that no cold air is blowing in from underneath it.
· Let the Sunshine In – When the sun is shining, open all the curtains where it is shining at. This is one of the most eco friendly tips. It does not cost a thing to allow the suns warmth into the home. It is also good for those who get sad when the weather is consistently inclement. As soon as the sun is not shining any longer, close the curtains to help trap the warmth for a bit longer.
The above tips do not cost much and are completely eco friendly. In most cases, staying warm is free and does not require anything to be purchased. At best, the cost is nominal and the effect it has on your family and budget is realized over the length of a long cold winter.
