Is Your Home Secure?
How can home security systems help?
A home security system is better known as a burglar alarm, although the term is slightly too generalized to actually encompass all the available units and features, it’s the closest term that can describe what the system can do. They are designed to sense an intrusion within a protected area and to alert the homeowner through an audible alarm or inform a monitoring company regarding the possibly unauthorized entry. The system may or may not include surveillance cameras and video recorders.
If the equipment is chosen well for the specific security purpose it’s designed to perform, it can:
- prevent an attempted burglary by sounding a loud alarm and thus discouraging the burglar from entering the premises
- alert the homeowner about a possible intrusion
- alert the neighbors and passersby
- trigger a ‘silent’ alarm that will alert a remote monitoring company about a possible burglary
- monitor and record a video of unauthorized activities within the premises
- act as a visual deterrent for would-be burglars who might be considering your home as a target
How do home security systems work?
The basic system works by using certain technologies in order to detect and report a disruption in a set pattern. For example, you might want to install window alarms in order to prevent burglars from coming in through your windows. The security equipment works by allowing the transmission of signals between the receiver and the transmitter to remain constant. Once that pattern of signals is interrupted, such as when the window is opened without turning off the device, the alarm is triggered. This then alerts you or anyone present that something is amiss.
In some systems, it is triggered but the alarm is instead sent to remote monitoring company whose job is to verify the alarm and to call the authorities when necessary.
